How do I Leave My Job?

By: Bryony Roe

Great! You have successfully found that fantastic new job you wanted on AccountingJobs.co.uk! Now its time to leave your current position…

There are ways in which to make the transition more pleasant for all involved. It is important to make your employer aware that you intend to leave all projects completed and affairs in order.

The resignation itself can be a tricky subject. It is vital to put your intentions into writing. This is called your resignation and should be given to your direct superior. It will then be added to your employment record.

When writing your letter, try to keep it short and to the point. It should include; the fact that you will be leaving, the last date of your employment and should thank your employers for the opportunity. Do not include any bad feelings you may have towards the company in question. Your letter will be attached to your record permanently, so any negativity may affect future success.

Handing your resignation in should be handled with care. This is not a subject that should be brought up publicly. Arrange a private meeting with your superior so that you can discuss the matter in full. You should bring along your letter in a sealed envelope and hand it to them during the meeting.

Once completed and given to the addressee, the quality of your work performance should not falter. Avoid the temptation to take time off in your last few weeks. Any decrease in productivity could affect your career if you ever require a reference.

There is a possibility that your employer may question you about your choice to leave. Ensure that you are prepared for these questions and try to emphasise that the blame does not lie with them. Try to end your working relationship on a professional and positive note.
