The basic function of any number plate is to identify the car. The basic information related to a number plate is the owner of the car and to which geographical location that the car belongs to. Typeface: The very simple typeface or the serif typeface is compulsory. Now this typeface is legal and the rest illegal. This is because now the numbers need to be recognized by not only the humans but also the automatic recognition systems. These automatic systems are being used increasingly by the government authorities. The variants of typeface which are hard to read like the italic font and multiple strokes are now illegal and not allowed. The car has to show number plates that are easily readable for humans as well as machines. Fancy version: The fancy typeface that is allowed legally is the 3 dimensional (3D) effect version of the typeface that is compulsory. Size and Shape: All the character except the number 1 and letter l must be 79mm high and 50mm wide. Fancy version (size and shape): The above statement means that some alteration in the size and shape of number 1 and letter l is still legally allowed in the Fancy Plates. With reference to measurement all the characters except number 1 and letter l are treated as a rectangular block of dimensions 79mm x50mm. Fancy version: In this case also the number 1 and letter l can be a bit different. National Emblems: The national emblems can be used to give a fancy look to the number plate. There is a restriction on these usage too . You can neither change the design nor its color combination. The list of these emblems is as follows. 1 British Union Flag with "GB", 2 English Flag (St George Cross) with "ENG", 3 Scottish Flag (St Andrew Cross) with "SCO", 4 Welsh Flag (green dragon on green/white field) with "Wales" and "Cymru" or 5 Euro Flag (circle of stars) with "GB". If there is display of Euro/GB configuration, there is no need for the vehicle to show separate "GB" emblem while driving in EU. Color: The car should show plates with number in its front and rear. The front pate should have white background with black characters. The rear plate should have a yellow background with black characters. Fancy Color: The rule stipulates about the background and character color but not about he border. The border can be colored but non-reflective.
