New barcode scanning solution is being tested in hospitals in ,Texas, the system has been produced to help prevent common medical faults occurring inside hospitals across the world. IntelliDOT Corporation, is a leader in the field of wireless hand held barcoding system for hospitals. They recently announced that they had completed its implementation of their new IntelliDOT Bedside Medication Administration across a network of hospitals across Texas. The device is less than 8oz and designed to sit at the patient’s bedside, the unit will run for twelve hours and power is supplied from its in built battery system The barcode system is engineered to be lie at the bedside of the patient, it has the ability to store key data about the patient and enable medical staff to easily view the blood group, personal details and potentially medical history. Where it will assist the most will be with regard to the reduction of over or incorrectly prescribed medication. Portable barcode scanning units can be carried by the medical staff and allow them to view details about the patient immediately. The intelliDOT systems will allow the doctor/nurse to input data into the barcode reader about the medical case, the information will then synchronise with to a central server or database, which allows the information on the barcode reader to be digitally updated. This system alone could digitise current patient records and medical case data allowing resident doctors to readily access records of their current patients. Despite its revolutionary application, barcode systems is currently used to retain differing types of data, saying this the systems needed to manage these style systems are very ingenious and IntelliDOT are leaders in this area and must be rewarded for their technology and research. In Britain many Healthcare centres are still driven by paper filling and paper records. The national health service in the UK are still utilising prehistoric systems for patient medical history and prescribing medication within hospitals and health centres within the UK, however with systems like this having a considerable cash value it will be a long time before many hospitals and health services install a fully paperless system. IntelliDOT should be praised for the idea behind these barcode scanner systems, from a health and safety aspect alone the systems should help to save lives and help to reduce incidents of mal practice, for many medical institutions this should be worth the cash investment alone. Despite the concept of such a piece of technology, unfortunately I imagine many organisations investing in other areas before spending their finances on a system such as this.
