By the time of the Civil War, Fayetteville was a full-fledged city and included Arkansas College, the Ozark Institute, and the Fayetteville Female Institute, thus beginning its commitment to education. In 1862, Confederate forces burned all the commercial buildings, stores, and vacant houses to the ground. Several battles were fought within the streets of Fayetteville during the Civil War, but the citizen's rallied on and didn't let the city fall. Fayetteville kept building and expanding its real estate, taking pride in its education, community, and fairness and has evolved as a rich and diverse city that still prides itself in education, edification, and enlightenment.
