Ludhiana is located east in the state of Punjab in northern India. The city lies about 305 km northwest of Delhi and is 100 km away from Chandigarh. Ludhiana is on the banks of River Sutlej. The climate of the district is characterized by dryness except a brief spell of monsoon season in a very hot summer and a bracing winter. The cold season is from November to March June is generally the hottest month. December and January are the coldest months. The most important tourist attraction in the state of Punjab is Amritsar with its Golden Temple. This temple is considered to be the holiest of all the pilgrimages of Sikhism and houses Akal Takht, the supreme governing body of Sikhism. The Jalianwallah Bagh is a small park in the city where many pilgrims were massacred by the British police in the year 1919. The Changing of Guards and the ceremonial lowering of the flags ceremony at sundown are great tourist attractions and have their own symbolic importance. The Punjabi spirit of enterprise and business savvy is best exemplified by the city of Ludhiana which is renowned the world over for its hosiery goods. It is no exaggeration to say that in Ludhiana every household is a mini hosiery unit and everybody seems to be involved in some way or the other in this lucrative business. Home of Indias leading Agriculture University, Ludhiana is also the home of fairs and the spearhead of green revolution. Khanna, its satellite town is the Asia's biggest grain market. However, Ludhiana's claim to fame is not its commercial enterprises alone. It is an important pilgrimage centre as there are many historic Gurdwaras.
