Selecting A Gift For A Retiring Co-Worker

By: Adrian Adams

Choosing a retirement gift for a co-worker can be a tricky process. After all, the person that you know is probably mostly based on that person's career. For example, you are a teacher, you may not really know much about the retiring teacher beyond the fact that he or she is a teacher as well. Of course, if the person is retiring, purchasing items for the person's classroom wouldn't make much sense! Nonetheless, it is still possible to find the perfect gift for a person's retirement.

Going for Sentimental

Most people look forward to retirement, but retiring is also a very sentimental occasion. After all, the person has been working for the majority of his or her life. In addition, he or she may have been working for your company or organization for many years. As such, the person has likely formed an attachment with co-workers as well as with the routine of coming to work.

For these reasons, you can never lose with a gift that tugs at a person's sentimental heartstrings. Consider purchasing a nice photo album with everyone's picture and then have the co-workers sign the back of the photo. Or, in the case of a retiring teacher, obtain a yearbook for that schoolyear and have all of the faculty members sign the book. These gifts may not cost much to give, but they are invaluable in sentimentality.

Explore Plans for the Future

If you do know a bit about the person beyond his or her role at the workplace, you have a wide window of options available to you. If the person has mentioned that he is going to spend a lot of time fishing or playing golf, give fishing equipment or golf equipment to the person for retirement. If she likes cross-stitch of is an avid gardener, give her some cross-stitch material and thread or some gardening equipment.

Many retirees worry about the possibility of getting bored after retirement because their kids are out of the house and they no longer have a regular routine of getting up and coming to work. By reminding the retiree of his or her hobbies and all of the time that will be available to devote to them, the retiree will be better able to let go of the past and enjoy the future that lies ahead - what better gift could you possibly give than one that brings about peace of mind?
