Twitter -- Top 5 Myths

By: Barbara Wayman

Since its beginnings in 2006, Twitter has become the fastest growing social media site in the world. Named for the sound that birds make when they communicate, Twitter was designed as an instant communications network. It allows users to share 140-character posts that describe what they're doing, reading, learning and finding valuable.

Despite a user base in the millions, there are still many myths and misconceptions about what Twitter really is. Below are five myths and truths about Twitter.

1. There's no content on Twitter, it's all junk - This is not true, although I must say there is a lot of junk on Twitter. It's an open resource that anyone can use and a lot of people use it in a way that's not very effective. But there's a lot of value too, you just have to know how to find it.

2. It costs money to use Twitter - No it doesn't. Twitter is free.

3. Twitter takes up a lot of time - This one is really not true. You can be very effective on Twitter in a short amount of time but it comes from knowing and using some time-saving tools like Tweetdeck and socialoomph.com.

4. You have to use your cell phone on Twitter - Something like 80% of Twitter users do use their cell phones with it, but you don't have to. You can be very effective at using Twitter solely through your computer.

5. Twitter is a fad that's not going to last - Twitter is a new company that has grown very quickly and it remains to be seen if it is able to continue to grow with user demand, that's true. But it seems pretty clear that the trend of micro-blogging, or communicating with lots of people through short messages, is part of a larger trend that is here to stay.

While Twitter is not for everyone, it is a great tool to connect with like-minded people, learn new ideas and access resources. Users should base their decision on whether to use Twitter on facts, not myths.
